Buy the Albums: Which Edition You Actually Want

There's a real decision to make here, not just a list of links. Vol. 3 has rarely been sold as a true standalone release in recent years, most of what's currently in print bundles both albums together in one form or another. So the question isn't really "which album," it's "which package." Here's what's actually worth buying.

The Full Catalog: The Traveling Wilburys Collection

This is the one most people should start with. It bundles both Vol. 1 and Vol. 3, adds the bonus tracks (Maxine, Like a Ship, Nobody's Child, Runaway), and throws in the documentary and all five music videos. Full details on what's in it here.

Just Vol. 1

If you only want the debut, either to start smaller or because you already own Vol. 3 some other way, both formats below are the original ten-track album on its own.

Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 (CD)

Standalone reissue, 10 tracks

The debut album on its own, no bonus tracks, no DVD. The cheapest way in if you're not sure yet whether this band is for you (you'll be sure by track three).

Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 (LP)

Standalone vinyl reissue

Same ten tracks, on vinyl, without the Collection box set's extras or price tag. A solid middle option between the CD and the full 3LP box.

Both Albums, No Extras

Want Vol. 1 and Vol. 3 together without paying for the DVD and packaging of the full Collection box? This is the leaner option.

Our Recommendation

If you're buying once and want the definitive version, get the Collection, CD/DVD if you want the documentary and videos, vinyl if you're building a proper collection and don't mind paying more for the pressing quality. If you're just testing the water, the standalone Vol. 1 CD is the cheapest legitimate way to find out whether this band is for you.

Curious what's actually on each release? Compare Vol. 1, Vol. 3, and the full Collection track by track.
